Despite the fact that his tendency to avoid conflict and sweet disposition make him... not the best Shadowhunter ("Do we really have to kill it? Maybe we can just... talk to it and come to an understanding!"), Riley is the golden boy of the Lightwood family, and by extension the entire Chicago Institute. Although his twin sister Avon feels much of the pressure to succeed that their parents put on them both, Riley gets the brunt of it as a result of being the only real son (that other boy that no one likes to think about certainly doesn't count). Unfailingly sweet but terrible under pressure, he's prone to nervous habits like nail-biting, and organizes things when he gets stressed out. Riley doesn't necessarily want his golden boy position, either. In fact, he lives in a fairly constant state of guilt over the way his parents treat Kaelen, both his half-brother and parabatai. Although Riley doesn't speak up for anyone, not even himself, he is fiercely loyal and has the best intentions at heart.

Quite possibly the polar opposite of her twin brother, Avon doesn't take crap from anybody. Stubborn, snarky, and with a tendency to beat the living daylights out of anything/anyone that draws her ire, Avon often acts as Riley's voice when he refuses to speak up for himself. She has a strong sense of justice, and in all reality doesn't much care for the way her parents run the Institute, and she abhors how they treat the young Shadowhunters living there who aren't their children. Although she has nothing but love in her heart for Riley, she gets very irritated at how much he is babied and favored, and has been known to make a snide remark or two concerning the matter. The consummate mother bear, Avon makes it her personal duty to defend those who can't or won't defend themselves.

TAKEN - SOUTHKaelen is the little mistake that every adult in the Lightwood family wants to forget about. He, Riley, and Avon all share the same mother, Willow Lightwood, but Kaelen's birth was the result of an affair she had while she was engaged to Riley and Avon's father Casper. She kept the pregnancy a secret until after their marriage, thinking she could pass the child off as legitimate, but was ultimately found out although the whole affair was kept very quiet for the sake of the Lightwood family's reputation. While his mother does little more than ignore his existence, Casper shows a far more vehement animosity in the form of constant criticism and the assertion that he is nothing but a disappointment. While Kaelen is on good terms with both his half-siblings, he is extremely bitter about Riley's preferential treatment, especially after being
forced coerced into taking the parabatai vows with him for the sole reason of being a human shield ("Make sure your brother's safe, Kaelen." "It's your job to protect your brother, Kaelen." "We wouldn't be upset if you jumped in front of a sword to keep your brother from getting a scratch on his perfect face, Kaelen."). Despite being constantly told otherwise, he's actually a very good Shadowhunter even though Riley inevitably gets the credit for his successes nine out of ten times. Kaelen is extremely intelligent, an avid reader with a snarky sense of humor and a chip on his shoulder no one but Avon can seem to work around. He will never admit it, but underneath all of his bitterness, he's much sadder than he ever lets on.

A hellion with a devious streak, it isn't uncommon to catch Kiera sneaking out of places she's supposed to be and into places she isn't. She's the wild card to Avon's rock-solid dependability, and they function well as both teammates and friends thanks to their opposite but still complimentary personalities. She loves strategy and logic games, especially chess. Kiera is often known to have a short temper, flying off into rages that typically result in any expensive things in the nearby vicinity being broken in the wake of her wrath. She breaks rules for the sake of breaking them, a habit that makes her unpopular with the Lightwood parents but both a willing chess partner and proverbial partner in crime to Kaelen, who reasons that if he's going to be despised he might as well give people a reason to hate him. The two of them can be blamed for almost any prank or malfunction that befalls the Institute, but Kiera has a very serious, grave nature when something important is on the line, a superior strategic mind making her invaluable in a crisis.

TAKEN - SOUTHAn orphan since the age of four, Gallifrey has been a ward of the Institute for almost as long as she can remember. Having grown up in the cavernous halls, her curious, feisty nature has led her to explore and learn every nook, cranny, and secret passage of the place. She can pop out from behind tapestries without the slightest warning, crawl out of a hole in the floor that no one else knew existed, but usually she can be found climbing just about anything. Quick and agile, Gal can scale anything from a bookshelf to a tree to the side of a building with very little difficulty, something that makes her good for getting into places that wouldn't be accessible for the rest of her peers. She is sunny, bubbly, and more than a little hyper, a trait that makes her get along perfectly with her parabatai, Jacob. The two are as close as siblings, both growing up as orphans within the Institute, and both are somewhat frowned upon as Shadowhunters, told they are too volatile and not nearly professional enough. However, it cannot be argued that they don't truly fight as extensions of one another, unbeatable in combat as long as they're fighting together.

TAKEN - IRIDESCENTIf one were to look up 'ADHD' in the dictionary, there would be a guarantee of finding Jacob's picture next to the definition. Constantly moving, Jacob is usually seen as a blue-eyed blur rocketing down the halls of the institute. Even when in a situation that requires him to be still, he constantly twitches, drumming out little rhythms with his fingertips on any solid surface. A very skilled drummer, Jacob often uses his music as an outlet for pent-up energy, sometimes spending hours behind a drum kit and forgetting to get up to eat. Although he has a very happy, carefree exterior, Jacob has many mental and emotional issues that have not been addressed. After watching his parents and sister die at age seven as the result of a demon attack, he has since suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and is a victim of night terrors almost every time he tries to sleep. Typically very friendly and welcoming (although his relationship with Kaelen is rather tense simply because their personalities clash so much), Jacob is a social butterfly, but he is closer to Gallifrey than anyone, parabatai and best friend and kindred spirit all in one, and she alone knows about the darker things that he keeps locked up in his mind.

She's become jaded with the supernatural and is more than a little judgmental of Downworlders after everything that's happened, but for now Edana is determined to just be
normal for a while. Too bad that when your last name is Lightwood, normal doesn't really go with the territory. There's a storm coming, and Edana might just find herself caught in it whether she wants to be or not.

Caper has a great deal of resentment for both his wife and Kaelen (he blames Willow for being unfaithful but he blames Kae for
existing), although his issues with Willow usually tend to be transferred into his animosity towards her illegitimate son. He is a staunch believer in the Law, and wouldn't hesitate to turn even one of his own charges at the Institute over to the Clave if they were to break it. Overall, he isn't a nice person, but he is only so because his life has embittered him and his family pride is stronger than his affection.

If there is one thing she is more protective of that herself, it is her children, Riley more so than Avon. She is intelligent and analytical, and thinks of things like a military strategist (it was her idea for Kaelen and Riley to become parabatai, what good was the boy if not for a human shield?). Eighteen years in a loveless marriage has hardened her already stone heart, and now she's something even her favored children can't really call a mother.

One time he farted and his house blew up. His mannerisms are typically goofy and good-natured, but Colt is an old soul, literally, older than most known living warlocks. His long life has made him more than a little jaded, and he carries with him the kind of sadness that can only come from seeing lifetimes of pain. Mildly empathic, he can very acutely sense the emotions of others, and is known for trying to fix people's problems, although his involvement usually turns out making things more complicated.

Jo enjoys mind games, and has been known to entrap even the wisest of the Seelie Court in her riddles, and she uses this quick wit with humans as well, either bending them to her will or driving them mad as a way to pass the time. She often questions the origins and Laws of the Downworld, a philosopher with a scientific streak that leads her to both research and theorize about the world around her. Usually quiet and soft-spoken, whenever she talks she is always sure to say something incredibly profound.

He has a very defined sense of looking at things, something rare in the philosophical, grey-area world of the Fey, a stark delineation of black and white, this and that. He's more stubborn than a braying donkey, and it is nearly imposible to get him to change his mind once it's made up. A collossal dork though he may be, Maddox is incredibly gifted with archery, wielding an enchanted bow that he may or may not have obtained by dubious means.

Life as a werewolf wasn't nearly what she expected it to be, though, a life of subservience to her superiors and a carefully-constructed social hierarchy that she was no longer the top of. When the pack leader died in a recent vampire raid, she expected leadership to fall to her, having been close to him, but she was shocked and infuriated when the role of Alpha went instead to Breyer, who had been the Beta up to that point. Blinded by a power-hunger that had only grown in her time a a lycanthrope, Amity is now determined to make herself pack leader - no matter what the cost.

To put it lightly she was a country mouse in the big city, didn't know any better than to walk around the seedier parts of town after dark. She still won't talk about what happened to her that night, only that the result was her transformation into a lycanthrope. Still, the others can piece together the story from her mannerisms - twitching away when someone tries to touch her, startling easy at fast movement or loud noise, waking up screaming - but they're not going to try to force her to talk about it. Wolves don't do that feelings junk anyways. Even though she's the hick hayseed of a pup, the new kid on the block, Ailis has caught Breyer's attention and has been taken under his wing; he's really the only one of the pack that she'd even come close to honestly sharing something with.

Jude is in the habit of playing it cool, but inside he's a bit of a mess. He struggles with the responsibility of it all, although he never admits it. When he thinks no one is looking, his high strung habits find their way out as he argues aloud with himself and flails his way into borderline panic attacks. The rest of the time his worries are caged in his head, a nearly unrelenting dialog of mental meltdown hidden behind an easy going face.

He has no intention of being the one to rock the boat — especially if doing so might mess up his hair.

The only time his grin seems to fade is when it comes to thinking about his family's current situation; Fitz knows that if they are really as safe as Jude reassures them, then there would be no need for them to venture out under the cover of darkness.
